- To encourage the participation of a cross section of individuals in the development of international friendships with Atlanta and Rio de Janeiro residents, thus fostering a continuing relationship of mutual concern through long-term relationship.
- To assist with the establishment and support the Rio de Janeiro-Atlanta Committee which will encourage and facilitate economic, social, cultural and civic exchange.
- To collaborate with other organizations which have similar visions and goals
- Review one-by-one other cities that seek a relationship with Rio de Janeiro. Twinning must be beneficial to Atlanta’s relationship.
The Atlanta-Rio de Janeiro Sister Cities Committee is a member of the Atlanta Sister Cities Commission, with the Chair of the Committee working as a liaison between the two organizations.
The Committee officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) are elected by the Committee voting members for at least a one calendar year term. Each officer may remain in office as they are able to perform the required duties. Their work is voluntary and there is no compensation associated with the position.
In 2004 Wilma Kruger was elected Chair of the Atlanta-Rio de Janeiro Sister Cities Committee. Wilma is the first Brazilian to hold this position.
